Tradition New album from 9ice
Ever
since the release of his trailblazing track 'Gongo Aso' his music fans all
over the world have been waiting in anticipation to see what he would do
next and probably wondering if he would be able to top the high standard
of 'Gongo Aso'
9ice of course had been very busy since Gongo Aso featuring on numerous
collaborations most recently with Terry G and M.I on the Jamix hit track
'Omo
Naija'
The new album is actually his third official album, although many people will probably believe this to be his second. because his first only became well known after the hit track, ‘Gongo Aso’ became such a national, African, and global hit. The album that followed seemed to answer sceptics who thought he could only make good singles and not a full album. with hit tracks like ‘Street Credibility’ (featuring 2Face), ‘Photocopy’ ‘Party Rider’, Ade Ori’, ‘Wedding Day’ and more, eventually earned the album both critical and mass appeal.
‘Tradition his third album has distinctive sleeve which is hard to miss, featuring with 9ice staring back at himself in a traditional gown and that basically sets the tone to the album as nice drops proverbial lyrics in his unique style combining pidgin English Yoruba and Hausa.
The nature and lyrical content of his offerings mean that you normally need to listen to the tracks more than once to fully appreciate the messages and subtle undertones in his music On this album 9ice has explored different beat styles including traditional Fuji, juju beats along with hiphop and reggae all fused with the Naija pop beat,
9ice as always, delivers his proverb laden songs laden with an incredible flow! He works with the best, including his muse, ID Cabasa, and others like Dr Frabz and Terry G (who finally produced a track for an artiste he couldn’t overshadow!). One or two tracks on the album are quite naughty, and if you have never thought of 9ice in that way, prepare to be slightly amused.
The
Tracks
There are sixteen tracks on the album and there might have been one or two
tracks that could have been saved for the next album, and some of the songs
themselves are a minute or so too long. Having said that, it does what a
follow-up album should do- let people know you are still here, you are still
relevant, you still have your own sound but are willing to experiment.
' Energy’,has
an ironic title since it is one of the more laid back songs on the album.
We also liked ‘Gbamu Gbamu’ very much, and ‘Respect is
(indeed) Reciprocal’. while ‘Anytime’ is reminiscent of
‘Street Credibility’ and is a very sweet song (you might want
to give 9ice a hug when you’re done),
The collaborations make for interesting listening. The cut with Nneka (‘Show some Love’) has a mini-reggae feel to it, and while it was predictable that 9ice and Asa would do a song based on social commentary, and maybe we would have preferred a surprise there, the song (‘Pete Pete’) one of the best in my book,I could listen to it all day.
Tradition will grow on you, so be patient with it. It is after all, a very 9ice album!
9ice Splits up with Wife
Hot off the press is the sad news filtering through the entertainment community. just as speculation was mounting, an official press release from 9ice’s PR representatives confirmed the news. Nigerian musician 9ice and his wife of one and half years, beauty entrepreneur Toni Payne have broken up.
According to the press release, “The couple have agreed to separate for a while, even though they continue to remain good friends and business partners…And it is their wish that we all respect their privacy at this period”.
The
couple who wed in July 2008 began dating before the musician attained widespread
acclaim and success. toni-payne-pregnant-with-9ices-baby
Many credit the combination of 9ice’s talent and Toni’s managerial
and publicity skills as the formula for the singer’s success. The
couple is blessed with a son – Zion. According to the press release,
Toni Payne will retain primary custody of their child.
We wish both 9ice and Toni Payne the best in this difficult time.
